The lead changed once — in the first, on Masyn Winn's three-run homer off a 79.5 mph sweeper — and never changed again, though the Royals stayed close enough to reach all night. Stephen Kolek got five outs and gave up 9 earned runs on 9 hits; nine of the ten men who reached against him came around to score. Kansas City answered with four in the second and got two home runs from Jac Caglianone that left at 444 and 426 feet, but the Royals never drew even, and the closest they climbed was the final margin of two. By the end of the second inning both starters were done — Dustin May with 6 earned, Kolek with 9 — and the rest of the night was twelve relievers and a lead that kept getting smaller without changing hands.
