The fifth inning is where Philadelphia's lead disappeared: Bryce Harper's sacrifice fly and Alec Bohm's RBI single had put the Phillies ahead 3-1, and then Alvarez hit a fly ball to right center with two men on, turning that lead into a 4-3 deficit. Brooks Raley faced three hitters in relief and did not record an out: two hits, two walks, two runs, and the inning was still going when Orion Kerkering entered. Kerkering gave up four more — four hits, two walks, and by the time the sixth ended, Philadelphia had used three pitchers to get two outs. The Phillies left ten men on base and scored three runs on nine hits, which is the math of a team that kept starting rallies and could not finish a single one.
