Gil threw 88 pitches in four innings, walked three, and handed Tampa Bay a lead they held the rest of the night. Steven Matz answered with five innings and seven strikeouts, and three relievers gave up one run over the final four. Chandler Simpson drove in the go-ahead run on a second-inning groundout and added an RBI single in the sixth — the kind of line a player with his legs produces when the ball finds grass just often enough. Ben Rice's solo homer in the eighth cut the deficit to two, and the Yankees brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth before Bryan Baker's 16th pitch finished it.
