Jack Flaherty struck out ten in five innings and still lost. The Red Sox scored four times off him — two earned — on three hits and a sacrifice fly, and Sonny Gray made it hold with five innings of four-hit, zero-run ball on 70 pitches. Caleb Durbin's third-inning double, 105.9 mph off the bat, scored Marcelo Mayer, and Willson Contreras followed with a sac fly. Tyler Samaniego struck out three in two clean innings, and Greg Weissert needed 11 pitches to finish the ninth. Detroit collected four hits, left eight on base, and committed the game's only error. Flaherty threw 96 pitches, 67 for strikes, and took the loss anyway.
