Cade Cavalli threw 95 pitches through 5.2 innings and left with the score even — which is what a starter is asked to do. Sandy Alcantara matched him for six, and then the eighth inning found Gus Varland: 28 pitches, two walks, two hits, three runs. Heriberto Hernández's two-run single on a line drive to left was the one that broke it open. Washington put six hits together and left five on base, and the game ended with them batting in the ninth, still down three.
