The Nationals outhit the Astros 11 to 6 and left 11 on base. Andrew Alvarez walked five in 5.2 innings and gave up five earned runs on four hits. James Wood's 25th home run — 111.4 mph off the bat, 419 feet to right center — gave Washington the lead in the first. By the fourth, Houston had taken it for good on Nick Allen's two-run single and Christian Vázquez's sacrifice fly. Tatsuya Imai needed 84 pitches to get through 3.2 innings and walked three. Jose Altuve added his 10th in the eighth. Josh Hader came on with two outs in the ninth, walked one, struck out one, and finished it. Washington had runners on base all night and kept leaving them there.
