Pauley's three-run homer in the second put Miami ahead, and it was the last inning the Marlins led. Pérez needed 92 pitches for four innings and left with ten hits and seven runs against him, five earned. Ewing drove in three on a double and a single, both to left field, both off Hernández. Tong struck out seven in five innings and gave up all four Miami runs, which was enough on a night the Mets had sixteen hits.
