Varland threw 24 pitches in the ninth, gave up two hits and two walks, and recorded two outs. Cease had struck out six in five innings and left trailing — 94 pitches, four earned — but the Athletics were still close enough to come back. Okamoto tied it in the seventh with his 29th home run, a 109.8 mph drive that landed 423 feet away. Gelof drove in the first and third runs and scored the second, and Toronto's nine hits and three errors were still not enough.
