Back-to-back home runs in the eighth decided this one, and both of them went to center field. Sonny Gray had given up four runs in seven innings and left trailing, because Mason Barnett gave the Athletics five innings and Scott Blewett added two more without allowing a run. Wilyer Abreu led off the eighth against Luis Medina, and Willson Contreras followed him — two swings, same direction, and a one-run deficit became a one-run lead. Ceddanne Rafaela's double in the fifth had scored two and put Boston ahead before the lead changed hands twice more. Chapman needed eleven pitches and struck out two.
