Dylan Cease threw 120 pitches and gave up one hit across nine innings, and the one hit was a single. George Springer's three-run homer in the third came on an 0-2 curveball at 79.3 mph — a count where Boston had no business letting him extend — and that was the ballgame before the inning ended. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled twice, once at 109.1 mph, and the Boston lineup never solved the problem: twelve strikeouts, three walks, and a line that reads zero. A complete-game shutout is a tax on the arm, and Cease paid it in full. Sonny Gray left after five innings having allowed ten hits, and the Red Sox used two pitchers the entire night because the first one did not give them a reason to go deeper.
